The First 2 Minutes Rule
There is no habit that we can work on that takes <2 min to do; however, nearly any habit can be started in <2 min.
Sometimes we don’t get around to doing things because we focus on the overwhelming distance of the whole journey. Rather than focus on the whole thing, focus on the first 2 min.
(Ex: don’t focus on the 5 mile run, focus on the first 2 min. What are those first 2 min: put running shoes on; get out the door; lock the door; start the run.)
So it doesn’t really matter if you take another step. Motivation often comes after starting… not before. Motivation often comes as a result of doing work and it’s natural not to have it beforehand. You start the bit and then trust the rest of the process will flow naturally.
“The motivation needed to complete a habit is at its peak at the beginning if the behavior. The greatest amount of friction for any type of task is in the beginning. Key idea: make it so easy that you can’t say no.”
